Transferring Colleges is a Pain in the Butt: Three Things You Need to Watch out For

The Student Life: College, University, and a Whole Lot of Studying!

Yea, I know what you’re thinking: a whole lot of studying? Well, unless you’re a wonder-student who can memorize random facts and formulas, expect to do your fair share of cramming and flash cards. But more than that, the real surprise is that, despite what the media will portray, the student life is about a whole lot more than just school: it’s about friends, partying, and self-discovery (okay, so the last one doesn’t sound that fun).

If there’s one thing that university and college students seem to do more than anything else, it’s party. I don’t think I’ve ever drank more in my entire life than I did when I went to college. Now, you certainly don’t have to become the student cliché and start drinking wine like it’s water, but it’s hard to deny that college students consume more alcohol than any single other demographic. Have you ever wondered why all those vodka and beer commercials are aimed at college students?

Getting Straight With Yourself

University is a time when you’re going to have a lot of freedom and a lot of time to make your own decisions. Your parents probably won’t be standing over you to make your decisions for you, so you’ll be able to experiment and explore without fear or reprisal or consequence. However, be prepared to deal with the repercussions of poor decisions and the consequences of your actions. If you make a mistake you’re the only person that’s going to have to deal with it.

How you choose to carry yourself throughout your college years is dependant entirely on what you want to do. You could focus on academia, working hard to keep your GPA up (and the scholarship money flowing), you could become a student athlete and get involved with some sports teams, or you could simply cruise through university and take every day as it comes.

Whatever you choose to do it’s important that you enjoy yourself. These years only happen once, and once they’re gone they won’t be coming back. It’s a sad reality, so make ‘em count.

The Party Scene

I’m not going to sit here and honestly attempt to lecture about the dangers of drinking. I’m not even going to lie: I drink, and I have a good time when I do. What’s important is keeping your priorities straight: school first, party second. We’ve all seen the people that took partying a little too literally and wind up dropping out of university and never getting a degree. Don’t be that person- you’ll regret it the rest of your life.

While parties can be fun, they can also be dangerous. Make sure to follow some pretty simple rules:

1. Keep your eye on your drink – Don’t let it out of your site, especially if you’re a woman. Someone could slip something in it and plant you in a world of hurt.

2. Always be safe – Your sex life is your own thing, and whether you choose to abstain or enjoy sex is entirely your decision. Whatever you decide to do, make sure that you’re safe about it. Condoms are inexpensive and found just about everywhere.

Remember, “Chlamydia: hard to say, easy to catch”.

3. Keep your clothes on – Now I’m not going to discount the wonders of being naked (lord knows that I love to strip), but with camera’s being in just about everything you’ll probably wind up regretting becoming a free spirit.
